Sharon Hall’s paintings set the viewer a visual challenge. They combine abstraction with meticulously drawn images, which often layered over one another are set against fields of shimmering colour.
Although there have been some uses of the computer in the field of art for a good three decades now, it is only within the last few years that a more widespread curiosity has led to a growing exploitation of creative potential.

During the Barcelona Olympics, David Hiscock represented Great Britain as official Visa Olympic Artist. At Eastgate, the Castlefield Gallery presents a series of 12 Cibachrome prints produced for this year’s games.
Estelle Thompson is emerging as one of Britain’s most interesting young artists. Since leaving the Royal College in 1986 she has continued to develop and refine her paintings and has built up a substantial body of very good work.
Castlefield gallery’s auction show, A Friend In Need, raised close to £10,000 – a fully qualified success in these times of recession – and ensures the gallery’s survival into the next financial year. Grateful thanks go to the donors and buyers (and Anthony H Wilson, who proved to be a capable auctioneer) for rallying around.
Its successor is Linda Weir: Paintings, which highlights the work of one of Manchester’s best-loved painters. The initial impact of these paintings is derived from a sumptuous use of colour and their manifest richness of detail. Decorative and formal elements are reconciled with great skill.
“At The Edge”, an exhibition of the work of John Moores’ prizewinner John Capstack is likely to shock many people.
As its contribution to the International Festival Of Expressionism, Castlefield Gallery is showing the work of three contemporary artists, each demonstrates the heightened humanism, which defines expressionism.
