EXHIBITION & EVENTS ARCHIVE
“Games People Play” is an exhibition in two halves, showing simultaneously at Castlefield Gallery in Manchester and Storey Gallery in Lancaster. It is a collaboration between two artist-led venues in the North West to celebrate the Commonwealth Games 2002 in Manchester. Curated by artist Paul Needham, the exhibition explores the wider significance of games through a range of influences including the psychological, social and environmental. It asks the question “Do the games we play reflect the type of people we are?”
Internationally acclaimed photographer Elaine Constantine returns to her Northern roots to open the new gallery with an exhibition of specially commissioned work focusing on Manchester’s thriving tea dance culture centred around the city’s Ritz Nightclub. The exhibition celebrates the public launch of Castlefield Gallery’s relocation.
North West artist Adela Jones will be performing a live art installation in the gallery based on the scenario of a romantic meal for two. The focus will be on the process and method used to prepare and eat ‘aromatic crispy duck’ with the audience being invited to share a couple’s meal.
The Makers’ Network presents “What’s in a Name?” The Craft and Art Debate. A panel of leading craftspeople and artists debate the relationship between art and craft and discuss whether there is a clearly defined moment when craft becomes art.
