Volunteer Spotlight: Ella Crook
Posted on 24 September 2025
This month we have asked Volunteer Ella Crook to contribute to our Volunteer Spotlight series where we are asking volunteers to share their experience with us.
Hi Ella! Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?
I am a Fine Art student studying at Salford University. I experiment with mixed media in my artwork, and I tend to always feel inspired by nature and return to it as a topic. I have a garden I love taking care of, and a beautiful area full of greenery in Gatley to surround myself with. I think my first volunteer shift was 27th October 2024. Around 8 months.
What made you want to volunteer here?
I wanted more experience in the creative world since I don’t have an artistic job. I’ve referred to Castlefield Gallery in my studies before, and really admired the frequent exhibition changes which allowed me to take in a variety of art pieces.
What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Castlefield Gallery?
I feel more involved with the creative community than before. I get to meet interesting people and artists, which has meant so much to me.
What would you say to someone who’s thinking of volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?
This is ironic timing for me because one of my friends recently asked me what it’s like, and that she is thinking about trying it! I explained what I do on my shifts, which is usually at the front desk, and how I like to keep myself busy crocheting or sewing. I also mentioned the exciting events that randomly pop up, such as helping to take down an exhibition or joining an exploratory walk for nature with other artists. Of course, I told her she should give it a go.
Thank you Ella and all our fabulous volunteers for your amazing work!
