On Practice: Andrea Lowe
Posted on 4 March 2026
On Practice is a series featuring Castlefield Gallery Associates, offering a glimpse into the ideas, processes and questions shaping their work right now. Through these reflections, we get to know the people behind the artistic practice. How they think, what they’re exploring, and what it means to be developing work today. This month we interviewed artist Andrea Lowe.
Hi Andrea! How would you describe your practice in one sentence?
The body as a vehicle for making change.
What are you currently working on, or excited about right now?
My current practice is centred around change and working within the challenges of being an artist mother…questioning how I adapt to the necessities of work and homelife and how this reflects in what and how I make. Change is a given, and whereas I am passionate about social engagement, I am currently focussing on the artists’ body and life drawing as a grounding practice for the self within an exploration of broader issues. My research explores women’s experiences of trauma and healing within social settings, and I am inspired by walking as an artistic practice. At a time when it is difficult to go outside, how do I explore and communicate this?

What does Castlefield Gallery Associates make possible for you?
Castlefield Gallery Associates enables me to stay connected and engaged in the arts. It provides a professional platform and community of like-minded individuals to inspire and support. The events and training are delivered in an accessible way, allowing me to participate in a manageable and realistic way.
What are you hoping to explore or develop next?
A series of life size prints of the female form re-using packaging to build the print plate structurally and in terms of layout. The body as vessel and self as a package.
Quickfire – what is a tool, habit, or ritual you rely on?
Look in a mirror, draw myself, and feel connected.
What would you say to someone thinking about getting involved with Castlefield Gallery Associates?
Do it. It’s invaluable to artists. It can only be a positive.
Thank you for your responses, Andrea. How can people support/ follow the work you do?
