Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight: Rachael Mackerness

Posted on 18 February 2026

This month, we have asked Rachael Mackerness to contribute to our Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight series, in which current Castlefield Gallery Associates share their thoughts on what the programme offers and how it has been useful for them.

Can you tell us a little bit about your practice?

I am a Salford based painter that has experimented with a variety of styles, from abstract/texture-like pieces to realist detailed pieces for commissions including portraits and animals. I am currently moving to focus on portraiture, as I enjoy focusing on the colours and tones found in the human form. I have made my work commercial through attending the Makers Markets across Manchester, and newly Campfield Market. This has allowed me to see my work in a different light but one I would like to continue.

How did you hear about Castlefield Gallery Associates and why did you want to join?

I have been a volunteer with Castlefield Gallery for the last 2 years and this has allowed me to be a part of the Gallery’s scene and find out about the opportunities they offer. The Associates Scheme stood out to me as there are not many opportunities in the art world, for you to connect with a professional and gain real solid advice to help your development. They allow you to share any upcoming events you have within the Associates community as well as access to exclusive exhibitions to apply for, which is amazing.

What are you looking forward to most about your coming year’s membership?

This year, I am looking to push boundaries and try new things. Instead of sitting on ideas and whether or not they will work, I am going to throw myself into it and try to create new work and really build a practice for myself, focusing on what I want for myself.

The Associates Scheme stood out to me [...] as they allow you to share any upcoming events you have within the Associates community as well as access to exclusive exhibitions to apply for, which is amazing.
