Meet the People We Work With: Nikki Kinoulty
Posted on 9 April 2026
Meet the People We Work With is a series of short conversations with the artists, volunteers, collaborators and supporters who shape Castlefield Gallery. It offers a way to get to know the people behind the work, their interests, and how working together helps make space for artists and new ideas to develop. This month, we caught up with Nikki Kinoulty, who has just completed a 10-week Communications & Audience Development placement with us via the University of Manchester.
Hi Nikki! What made you want to do a placement with Castlefield Gallery?
I’ve always felt quite drawn to Castlefield gallery for a number of reasons. As an artist myself, I really appreciate the lengths Castlefield Gallery goes to to support artists, their commitment to sustainability, and I’ve always enjoyed the work I’ve seen exhibited.

What keeps you engaged in the work you do?
Sometimes when I feel like I’m losing motivation I like to remind myself that the things I work on all build towards something, whether that’s a personal project, my degree or just life experience. That’s when I tend to take a step back, take a break, and find new and fresh ways to approach whatever I’m doing.
What are you currently reading?
I’m currently reading The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst. I’d honestly really recommend it! It’s about a young gay man living in London during the 1980’s, while trying, and somewhat failing to, embed himself in the life of his semi-love interest’s upper-class family. It’s like Saltburn’s significantly cooler older brother.

What are you most interested in or curious about right now?
I’m really curious about the small communities that form around making art. Working at Castlefield Gallery and catching a glimpse of the “behind the scenes” has made me feel doubly inspired by Manchester’s creatives, and keen to engage in more workshop/volunteering opportunities.
What are you hoping to explore or develop next (either at Castlefield Gallery or in your own work)?
I’m keen to start exploring my own artistic voice – I’d really like to develop my own style and really refine my practice. I’m also excited to experiment with different mediums, and see where they take me.
