On Practice: Rachel Craven

Posted on 17 June 2026

On Practice is a series featuring Castlefield Gallery Associates members, offering a glimpse into the ideas, processes and questions shaping their work right now. Through these reflections we get to know the people behind the artistic practice, how they think, and what they’re currently exploring. This month we interviewed artist Rachel Craven.

Hi, Rachel! How would you describe your practice in one sentence?

I paint forgotten/left behind buildings and spaces, as a metaphor for living with chronic vestibular migraine.

What are you currently working on, or excited about right now?

I’m really excited about my solo exhibition at the Milestone Gallery in New Mills titled ‘No Longer What I(t) Was’ – it was exhibited until until 16th May. I hope people experienced the exhibition with a new way of seeing the beauty in the overlooked, dilapidated buildings that are all around us and feel the connection with migraine.

What’s something you wish you’d known earlier?

To slow down. Actually see what’s around you and take it in.

On a more practical note, I love how quick acrylic paints dry as I build my paintings in thin layers but it would be always be an issue for me on the palette, as the paints would dry out quickly. So I wish I’d known how to keep them wet for long periods. Luckily I came across someone who advised a DIY palette of damp kitchen roll, baking paper and a box with a lid (I use a ferrero rocher box) and they keep for a week!

What aspect of the Castlefield Gallery Associates membership are you most looking forward to engaging with?

Being part of an art community and everything that brings with it.

What are you hoping to explore or develop next?

My paintings tend to be realism with a hint of surrealism and I’m looking forward to pushing the surrealism a bit more. Experimenting with colour, composition and materiality.
