Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight: Elaine Fisher

Posted on 13 March 2024

This month we have asked Elaine Fisher to contribute to our Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight series, in which current Castlefield Gallery Associates share their thoughts on what the programme offers and how it has been useful for them.

Can you tell us a little bit about your practice?

I’m interested in the behaviours of things and the compensations that are made when different materials and shapes are brought together. Walking is a large part of my practice where I’m curiously drawn to building sites and geological formations, places that demonstrate what its like to be in a constant state of change. My work could be described as sculptural in its construction but also painterly in its use of colour and gesture, poetic in its language and photographic in its impulse towards image-making.

How did you hear about Castlefield Gallery Associates and why did you want to join?

Before moving to Manchester I looked up galleries and studios online to see where I might fit in. As my preference was for a live/work studio I was delighted to find that Castlefield Gallery offered access to an established network of artists. This gave me the confidence to find the right working environment for me without worrying about being isolated.

What are you looking forward to most about your coming year’s membership?

The last two advisory sessions I had with Curator and Deputy Director Gass Pendergast really helped me to imagine what the audience sees when encountering my work. Removing the knowing cloud of the studio and getting to the work’s material reality is probably one of the hardest things I have to do as an artist. So I’m very much looking forward to booking my next session.
