Volunteer Spotlight: Anastasia Eremeeva

Posted on 12 May 2025

This month, in a slight change to our regular Volunteer Spotlight series, we have asked Anastasia Eremeeva, who is undertaking a placement at Castlefield Gallery, to share her experience with us.

Hi Ana! Tell us a little about yourself. When did you start your placement with Castlefield Gallery?

My work at Castlefield Gallery since February has profoundly transformed my understanding of artistic practice. Currently a second-year Art History student at the University of Manchester, I’ve found the city’s untamed creative energy a powerful catalyst for experimentation and pushing boundaries. Its contemporary art scene makes a real impact on you as a viewer.

What made you want to do a placement here?

I discovered the gallery quite by chance during my first month in the city, while exploring the area. It was the exhibition, 40 Years of the Future: Painting which sparked the desire to return. Studying art history reveals the evolving dynamics of the art world, prompting reflection on its direction—a fascination intensified by my visits to Castlefield. A non-profit structure, like this one, felt particularly appealing because it promises a genuine freedom of creativity and support for the artists. The artist studio program and the abundance of opportunities—from exhibitions to advisory talks and events—provide invaluable support for emerging artists. Ultimately, I sought a placement here to gain a deeper understanding of the art scene, not just as a viewer, but from the perspective of its creation and ongoing support.

What’s your favourite thing about working with Castlefield Gallery?

My favourite aspect of working with Castlefield is the unique space it creates where art and spirit intertwine. The staff’s enthusiasm creates a shared creative energy, acknowledging the artist’s inherent vulnerability and the vital necessity of fostering a space of trust. I am very thankful for their unwavering faith in my capabilities, which was incredibly empowering. I had the privilege of documenting the expansive art studios, witnessing the various stages of the creative process. Conversations with artists about their practice, values, and inspiration were a very valuable experience for me.

What would you say to the students who will do a placement with Castlefield Gallery in the future?

I’m sure that it’s going to be an amazing experience and a great opportunity to meet the best people. You’ll have the chance to get involved in everything from helping with exhibition openings to engaging with the artists themselves. This is a chance to learn firsthand about the contemporary art world. I think it is important to make the most of it – really push yourselves to apply your skills to the fullest extent possible. And most importantly, don’t hesitate to share your ideas and contribute your unique perspective.
