Volunteer Spotlight: Carys Yudolph-Wood

Posted on 18 May 2022

Our team of amazing volunteers play a crucial role in the success of Castlefield Gallery. From being the first person that visitors meet on visiting the gallery, helping events run smoothly, and leaning about gallery administration, to getting hands on and working with artists to install exhibitions, photographing exhibitions, and creating content for social media. Each volunteer’s experience is unique to the skills they want to share and what they want to learn. One thing is for sure; as a charity with a very small team of staff, we couldn’t do all the work we do without our brilliant volunteers!

In this new series, each month we’re going to take the opportunity to shine a spotlight on one of our volunteers. We’re launching the series by speaking to Carys Yudolph-Wood who has been volunteering with us for 8 months.

Hi Carys! Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?

I am just about to graduate from the University of Manchester reading Film and History of Art and I’ve been at the gallery now for 8 months (!).

What made you want to volunteer here?

I decided to volunteer at Castlefield Gallery to gain some experience in the gallery setting in an attempt to get closer to the kind of art I was studying at the time and see what the day-to-day is like behind the scenes of an art gallery. As well, I was familiar with Castlefield Gallery and knew how friendly the staff were and didn’t really hesitate to ask how to volunteer.

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Castlefield Gallery?

I participated in a sound walk in the evening with Castlefield Gallery and that was a highlight for me, drawing me out of the gallery space and into the surrounding area that I had never seen before. I also really enjoy the opportunity to sit in the space whilst on the front desk and, as well as welcome in guests, contemplate on the place whilst doing my own university art history work.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking of volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?

To go for it! That everyone is incredibly welcoming and you will definitely get something out of it. There are always people here happy to help you out and there are some great opportunities that come with it!
