Announcement of spring 2020 Castlefield Gallery Associates Members exhibition

Posted on 28 November 2019

We are pleased to share news of the selection of the Castlefield Gallery Associates Members exhibition for Spring 2020. Castlefield Gallery Curator Matthew Pendergast travelled to Suffolk in mid November to visit the home and artist studio of gallery patron Ryan Gander, so that they could work together to review the final selection of proposals from members of the Associates scheme and make a decision.

The opportunity has been awarded to artist Bryony Dawson who will present a curated group exhibition featuring the work of artists who test the structural limitations of language, producing writing on topics including quantum physics, psychological space, autobiography and the everyday. Dawson’s proposed exhibition will be on display alongside the touring exhibition The Annotated Reader, a text-based group show curated by Ryan Gander and the writer and curator Jonathan P. Watts, which will be on display at Castlefield Gallery from 22 May – 21 June 2020. Gander and Watts have compiled a selection of texts that have been annotated by hand by a selection of prominent artists curators and thinkers.

Dawson’s exhibition was chosen as an exciting and considerate response to The Annotated Reader, and will include work from a range of artists working with film, sculpture, text, mixed media and sound. The selectors were especially impressed by the ingenuity of Dawson’s proposal which will provide a stimulating and intelligent language-based contrast, exploring the gap between experience and expression. She has also been working closely with the Castlefield Gallery team as one of the 2019/20 Manchester School of Art Graduate mentees, a programme for recent graduates to support them in their first year after graduation. Bryony Dawson works across film, performance and installation, considering the structures and rhythms that constitute our experience of time through recurring images of cycles, loops and duality. Bryony is also a member of the curatorial project Soft Spot, which is based in the subterranean gallery at Mirabel Studios, Manchester.
