Remember Nature 2025

04 November 2025

Manchester

Join us in standing up for Nature on Tuesday 4 November for Remember Nature 2025.

Castlefield Gallery is working with commissioned Lead Artist Yu-Chen Wang to mark the 10-year anniversary of the visionary art project Remember Nature initiated by artist Gustav Metzger. Castlefield Gallery is one of the 17 regional arts partners across England contributing to this significant moment.

Yu-Chen Wang’s Remember Nature event on 4 November will involve a series of artist-led and self-led walking routes including:

  • A walk led by Yu-Chen Wang herself, starting at 12:30pm from the Derek Jarman Garden at Manchester Art Gallery.
Free tickets to reserve a spot on the walk are available here
  • A walk led by local eco-activist Jane Morris from the SPARK Network-organised event at Platt Fields and Hall initiated by artist Phil Barton (10am – 4pm) – see here for more info.

Those on the walks will be invited to explore Manchester’s ever-changing landscape: the natural environment, layers of histories, and the legacy of industry – all deeply intertwined. Together, attendees will seek to discover these interconnections, to gather stories, share reflections, and spark ideas.

All walks will lead to Hulme Community Garden Centre, where we’ll share hot refreshments and spend a couple of hours together, informally exploring the question: “What can we do to support nature?”. We are inviting community groups, environmental scientists, campaigners, artists and others to contribute and share their knowledge, skills and ideas in a variety of ways.

Invitees include wetlands scientists, Grass Routes, Trees Not Cars, Sustainable Communities Hulme and the Gaitskell Garden Project.

Tickets to attend the event at Hulme Community Garden Centre are available here

ACCESS

The walk will be suitable for wheelchair users; we will make more info about the terrain (e.g. any narrow areas, cobbles etc) available by mid-October. There is wheelchair access to the Derek Jarman Pocket Park from Nicholas Street. We envisage that the walk from the Derek Jarman Pocket Park to Hulme Community Garden Centre will take around two hours. We will offer a toilet break around halfway along the walk. The route is step-free with some slopes of up to 8 degrees. Part of the route is along the canal towpath.

All the spaces at Hulme Community Garden Centre are wheelchair accessible other than the bandstand. Some paths are a little narrower or softer than others, but still accessible, and there are multiple routes to all areas. Hulme Community Garden Centre also has an accessible toilet.

Please note that it will go dark while we are Hulme Community Garden Centre; there is lighting but it is not super bright.

We will be using covered outdoor spaces – we will do our best to make them warm and dry but please dress for the weather!

If you have any questions, please get in touch with kacey@castlefieldgallery.co.uk

FILMING

Please note that filming will be taking place at the main walk and the gathering at Hulme Community Garden Centre. The walk and gathering may be livestreamed and footage may be uploaded to the Remember Nature 2025 website archive may be shown at public events.

Map

As part of Remember Nature’s Day-of-Action, we created a public map of memory spots and points of interest across Manchester and beyond.

This map gathers places that hold meaning for individuals and communities in relation to nature, environment, and memory. If you would like to contribute to this map, please click here and complete the form.

Your contribution can be:

  • A place in the city or countryside that you associate with nature
  • A memory connected to a landscape, plant, or landmark
  • A story, reflection, or thought tied to a specific location

You can submit one place per entry (you are welcome to fill out the form multiple times). Submissions will be added to the shared Remember Nature map.
