Posted on 28 January 2022

Presented at Castlefield Gallery New Art Spaces: Wigan, Open Eye Gallery in partnership with Wigan Borough Council are excited to present the first exhibition in a new series of Saturday Girl About Town by the internationally renowned photographer Casey Orr.

Saturday Girl About Town is the award winning pop up portrait studio of photographer Casey Orr. In 2021/22 all fashionable folks in Northern towns are invited to show off their style and be photographed. This is the first exhibition. There will be more to come with opportunities to take part and a publication about the high street, fashion and the history of promenading here as well as projects in Burnley, Redcar, Blackpool and Chester. The project explores fashion, identity and the self expression of young people on Saturday afternoons on the high streets and public spaces of towns across Northern England. It is also about the streets themselves, the changes happening through the ways we shop and use town centres and how public spaces can serve the changing needs of local communities.

Saturday Girl won the Format Festival Award in 2019. Since 2014 Casey has travelled throughout the UK with her pop up portrait studio photographing young people since 2014  on Saturday afternoons.

Plus on Saturday 12 February from 12noon to 4pm all the fashionable folks of Wigan are invited to show off their style and be photographed at the Pop-Up Portrait Studio (entrance inside the Grand Arcade)

The portraits will be part of an important national body of work developed across England with Open Eye Gallery.

Location: Castlefield Gallery New Art Spaces: Wigan. 11 Standishgate, Wigan, WN1 1UE (the former Marks & Spencer store)

Supported by Open Eye Gallery, Wigan Borough Council, Castlefield Gallery and Historic England/Heritage Action Zones.
