Volunteer Spotlight: Brian Holt

Posted on 19 August 2025

This month we have asked Volunteer Brian Holt to contribute to our Volunteer Spotlight series where we are asking volunteers to share their experience with us.

Hi Brian Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?

I have been volunteering now for four months. I have always been interested in art growing up in the Harpurhey area of Manchester.  The local park was Queens Park which had its own Museum and Art Gallery. I have strong memories of this time even at an age of not knowing what I was looking at. I have always loved art ever since I have always found time to visit art galleries and read about art.

What made you want to volunteer here?

As a retired Mancunian living most of my life in the Greater Manchester area I first visited the Castlefield Gallery over twenty years ago while my children were studying art in Manchester and Salford. The opportunity to volunteer was very appealing.

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Castlefield Gallery?

What I like most about volunteering is meeting interesting new people and keeping up with new developing art. Accessing the arts and seeing behind the scenes giving me a more in-depth experience.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking of volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?

Anyone with an interest in art will benefit greatly from joining this friendly, warm and well-informed team.

Thank you Brian and all our fabulous volunteers for your amazing work!
