Meet the People We Work With is a series of short conversations with the artists, volunteers, collaborators and supporters who shape Castlefield Gallery. It offers a way to get to know the people behind the work, their interests, and how working together helps make space for artists and new ideas to develop. This month, we caught up with Alex Butcher, who is one of our volunteers.
Hi Alex, tell us a little about yourself, and what made you want to start volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?
Hi, I’m a 27-year-old graphic designer from Manchester. I’ve always been interested in the arts and sketching from a young age. I had a year after graduation doing freelance work, and looking for further opportunities. I found Castlefield Gallery because I had been looking for local arts volunteering opportunities and heard Castlefield was connected to where I studied, Salford University, since they offered opportunities to students. I started volunteering after contacting the venue last year, and since starting my current role, I’ve been trying to balance it with volunteering about once or twice a month.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering here?
Definitely make the most of your time here; I wish I knew about this gallery earlier! The gallery is very peaceful and a good detox from the noise of the workplace; you will be able to get other work done while you’re here. This does means you should make an effort to get involved with things like workshops and exhibition openings, its been a great privilege to attend the Christmas do we had for volunteers, though I have yet to be free for an exhibition opening, though when getting stuck in please make sure to bring a change of clothes and check ahead what you’re getting involved with!
What do you value about working with an artist-focused organisation?
I get to network and learn more about the art world, and be around other artists.
What are you currently reading?
I’m currently starting The Director by Daniel Khelman; I just read The North Will Rise Again by Alex Niven.

What are you most interested in or curious about right now?
I’m currently interested in history and mythology.
What’s a challenge you’ve grown into rather than overcome?
I’ve grown in confidence and organisation, especially over the course of my studies and through volunteering.
