Preparing and Installing Artwork for Exhibition with Matthew Bamber and Matthew Pendergast

28 November 2023 / 6:30 - 8:00pm

This event is exclusively for Castlefield Gallery Associates

This is an in person event at Castlefield Gallery

To celebrate the launch of a new series of video guides exclusively available for Castlefield Gallery Associates, join artist and technician Matthew Bamber and Castlefield Gallery Curator & Deputy Director Matthew Pendergast for an event providing tips and advice on preparing artworks for exhibition.

Matthew and Matthew will share their expertise on effectively preparing and installing artworks for exhibition. They will also offer broader advice on the practicalities of working with galleries, before delving into the topics of the video series; framing, hanging and packing artworks. The session will include a short Q&A so attendees are encouraged to bring any practical and logistical queries they may have!

After the event, the video guides will be available to all Castlefield Gallery Associates via the online resources page.

Matthew Bamber says:

Alongside my art practice, I am also a professional museum and gallery technician with over twenty years experience.

The skills I have learnt from being a technician have inevitably filtered down into my art practice, especially when it comes to making my work look the best it can, but also ensuring that it is safe from any potential harm that could occur during the different stages of transport – installing and deinstalling, for example.
I was asked by Castlefield to develop a video series that discussed and demonstrated different practical considerations in relation to artwork, after it is finished in the studio and ready to be exhibited. The videos focus on different stages including framing, packing and hanging your work.

For the in-person event I will be elaborating on the processes covered in these videos. I will also be able to answer any questions and discuss specific queries you may have about displaying your own work. Hopefully, I can share with you some of the basic good practice that I have learnt over the years.
