Artist’s Talk: Tiago Duarte

31 May 2016 / 18:30-20:30

For CG Associates members only.

Tiago Duarte will talk about his print- and process-based practice and his experience of working as an artist in different European countries. Now splitting his time between Edinburgh and Antwerp, close to the current European artistic hotbed of Brussels, Duarte will provide an insider’s perspective on the respective artistic scenes of Manchester, Edinburgh, Belgium and Portugal.

He refers to his practice as a “platform for the performance of erratic exercises” where the constraints of process such as repetition, differentiation and variation result in the creation of one-off pieces. He pushes the humble office printer to the limits of its expressive capacity while using a restricted range of resources, techniques and materials. The result is a body of work that is technically self-referential but pictorially expansive. Repetition and serial formats refer to industrial production and automated reflexive action, but Duarte’s key concern is with exploring errors in production, the limitations of the medium and the expressive capacity of these elements.

Tiago has exhibited nationally and internationally and his work is part of private collections in Portugal, France, Swiss and the United Kingdom. He completed an MA in Fine Art at MMU in 2013 and an MA in Research in Fine Art at Sint Lucas University in Antwerp in 2015. Upcoming exhibitions include: Het Cabinet/CIAP, Hasselt, Belgium (solo) December 2016; THE SOCIÉTÉ, Brussels,Belgium (group show) September 2016.

This session will be of particular interest to members interested in print, artist’s books, publishing and/or working in continental Europe.
