Are you wondering how to best present your digital art practice in a gallery space or questioning how to share a material-driven practice digitally?
Do you want to improve the consistency and effectiveness of how you use different mediums to research, develop, produce and get your practice out there?

This event will help you consider the pros and cons of navigating both digital and physical spaces with your art practice; proposing potential ways to communicate and work with galleries, curators, collectors and audiences.

Lindsay Friend is the co-founder and director of IMT Gallery (Image Music Text), based in east London and online. Widely recognised for driving cutting edge installation, sound, video, and multidisciplinary art practices, alongside championing more traditional art forms. This event will begin with an introduction from Lindsay, sharing significant examples of the ever evolving role of the digital within IMTs programme, working with a variety of different artists over the last 21 years. This will be followed by an audience Q & A led by Castlefield Gallery Head of Programmes, Matthew Pendergast.

At a time when digital technologies might seem to overshadow more physical forms of making and experience, this event seeks not to pit one against the other but to see what can be gained through a hybrid approach to both.

More about IMT and Lindsay Friend

Representing a core group of emerging to established artists, IMT is recognised for its collaborative and international approach. The gallery supports boundary-pushing artists, presenting thought-provoking projects that delve into complex social, cultural, and philosophical themes.  IMT also operates as a not-for-profit organisation, blending the ambition of a commercial contemporary art gallery with the experimental spirit of an artist-led space. Alongside her work at the gallery, Lindsay mentors artists, drawing on over 20 years’ experience working with artists and curating exhibitions. Her mentoring combines curatorial perspective with strategic guidance, supporting artists to develop their practice, articulate and position their work, and navigate opportunities within the wider contemporary art Sector. Lindsay has given talks on professional and gallery practice, including to students at the University of Reading, Birkbeck, University of London and Chelsea College of Art, and has served on selection panels including for Aspex, Portsmouth and House Work Presents, London.
