Join us for this event programmed by Alana Lake and Deeqa Ismail to coincide with their exhibition Broken Ecologies (15 March 2026 – 19 April 2026).

Fayann Smith will be reading her new spoken word piece Reichstag Reichstag (2026) which engages with many of the same tensions that underpin the Broken Ecologies exhibition. Smith approaches these tensions between power and instability, protest, control and systemic breakdown through the lens of digital culture, internet mythologies and emerging technological ethics. Her writing reflects on how contemporary experience is increasingly mediated through screens, data and networked communities, producing new forms of belief, paranoia and collective storytelling. In a moment where information circulates with extraordinary speed and spectacle shapes public perception, her work provides a critical counterpoint to the exhibition’s focus on systems of influence, control and cultural fragmentation.

Fayann Smith is a multimedia artist and creative consultant based in London, UK. Her practice spans experimental writing, music, film, photography and performance, operating between contemporary art, club culture and creative direction. As a published writer and poet, she performed alongside Benjamin Zephaniah at the Southbank Centre and was a section editor for Thiiird Magazine. Her journalistic endeavours include interviews with cultural icons such as Orlan, Sarah Maple, Salena Godden, and Peter Green.

Alongside this expanded cultural practice, Smith’s fine art has been included in the permanent collection of MoMA, New York, exhibited at the Clifford Chance offices in Canary Wharf as part of Transatlantic Pride curated by Michael Petry, and shown with the !WOWWOW! collective at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. A significant strand of her recent work has developed through October! Collective, a collaboration with Aleksandra Karpowicz and Isabella Steinsdotter. In 2019 the collective presented Body as Home at the Giudecca Art District during the 58th Venice Biennale, curated by Miguel Mallol. The work, for which Smith co-produced the soundtrack, is a three channel video tracing a journey of self discovery through identity, migration and the search for home. Filmed across multiple cities, it positions the body as both territory and refuge. Smith’s art has been featured in Artforum, The Art Newspaper, ARTnews, Artnet News, Frieze, Art Daily, Artlyst, Artribune, Exibart, Blouin Artinfo, Contemporary Lynx, Art Africa, Art Observed, CAA News, a-n, Le Quotidien de l’Art, Finestre sull’Arte, ArtsJournal, After Nyne Magazine, Cornucopia, Financial Times, Forbes, Wallpaper, Vogue Polska, Vogue Russia, Dazed, Surface, It’s Nice That, Elle Decor, The Atlantic, Robb Report, Culture Whisper, AFAR.
