Object Acting: A ceramic design workshop
Led by exhibiting artist and designer Joe Hartley.
This is an in-person event at Castlefield Gallery.
£30, limited £15 tickets for Castlefield Gallery Associates and anyone on a low income.
Learn how to construct a slab built piece of pottery and decorate it with slips made from clays dug up by Hartley.
The workshop is based on activity developed during Hartley’s residency with ANEW which led to our current exhibition ANEW Way to Peel an Orange. During the session you will explore a similar process to that illustrated in the exhibition, using the human form to design shapes that can be interpreted in clay. A range of photographic mediums will be used to capture participants actions and document their silhouettes so they can be transferred onto the material and into 3D form. As well as exploring and developing form, the workshop will be an opportunity to think about surface treatment and learn about decorative slips, their history and their make up.
The pottery you make will be dried, glazed and fired and will be available for collection at Altogether Otherwise a month after the workshop.
ANEW Way to Peel an Orange is a Portraits of Recovery and Castlefield Gallery commission, developed and presented in partnership with ANEW, funded by Brian Mercer Trust, The Howarth Trust, supported by Arts Council England, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Manchester City Council.
