Private Viewing brings together some well known and obscure early experiments with the use of audiovisual media as a tool in studio practice – “like a pencil”, in the words of a pioneer of the genre, John Baldessari.

Unresolved
04/12/2009When Castlefield Gallery approached the artist and influential teacher Pavel Büchler with an open brief for an artistic or curatorial project, he responded by proposing to reclaim the stripped-down identity of the gallery as, simply, ‘a place where art and the public encounter one another’.
He presents a sparse selection of works chosen with a preference for an economy of means which they share with his own practice – paintings by Kris Fierens from Antwerp and Gregor Hylla from Berlin; small photographic and installation pieces by the Swiss artist Pamela Rosenkranz and from Manchester, the improvised sculptures by Ian Rawlinson and Maeve Rendle’s asynchronic video recording of a pianist’s rehearsal.

Performance and CD Launch of Lemke/Gwilliam’s fourmill plus quarterinch
26/11/2009 / 18:00 - 20:00fourmill plus quarterinch is the duo of sound artists and improvising musicians Helmut Lemke and Ben Gwilliam. In this collaboration the two artists use different formats of audiotape; pre-recorded, prepared and unprepared. From individual banks of sound recordings on tape comes a subtle and often dense music that is both composed and improvised in concrete time.

Art, Literature and Economics: Between Dystopia and Utopia. Two Talks: Dr. Kaye Mitchell and Jasper Joffe

Dr. Kaye Mitchell will focus on the use of utopian and dystopian literature as a vehicle for socialist, feminist, queer and other radical politics, looking particularly at material produced in the 20th and 21st century. Jasper Joffe will focus on the annual Free Art Fair and its ideology in the shadow of the current economic climate.

Apocatopia
09/10/2009 / 13:00 - 18:00Castlefield Gallery is pleased to present Apocatopia, a group exhibition including the work of Ruth Ewan, Evi Grigoropoulou, Siobhán Hapaska and Pil & Galia Kollectiv. Through film, painting and sculpture the work explores the relationship between production, presentation and consumption of contemporary culture examining the role of money, ritual and desire in a changing cultural, political and economic topography.
Objects – What Matters? Technology, Value and Social Change conference
02/09/2009 / 16:00 - 22:00Artist Hilary Jack, recently exhibited in The Social Lives of Objects at Castlefield Gallery, and will be exhibiting her work and facilitating an informal event in the foyer of The Royal Northern College of Music, as part of Objects – What Matters? Technology, Value and Social Change conference. This is the 5th annual conference of the ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change.

Practical Truths
21/08/2009Practical Truths includes the work of Jacob Cartwright & Nick Jordan, Jenna Collins, G. Leddington, Olivia Plender and Ben Rivers whose work is represented in film, sculpture and photography. The show explores issues around methods of documentation that attempt to grasp the dichotomy of the individual and the universal revealing various truths about human culture. The works in Practical Truths often use narratives that focus on individuals or communities that sit uncomfortably with the demands of conventional living and thereby convey a timeless sentiment that is neither defined within the present-day nor within a specific historic decade.
