10/12/2011 / 12:00 - 17:00

Venue: Coniston Institute, Yewdale Road, Coniston, LA21 8DU

Alison Kershaw invites you to commission your own mini masterpiece!

Castlefield Gallery has selected Alison Kershaw to represent the gallery with her project Modern Nail Art at Grizedale Arts Art, Craft and Farmers Market.

The stall will feature a nail artist who will paint a classic work of art on your fingernail for a small charge per nail. The choice of the works of American abstract expressionist painting, from the canon of great art of the 20th century, reproduced in miniature for you personally by a genuine nail art technician. Obviously the purchase of the originals would be impossible and these could only be seen in public or private galleries. Reproductions are available in postcards, books or even hand painted canvasses but these unique works are individualised and yours alone.

The Manchester Contemporary

27/10/2011

Castlefield Gallery is pleased to announce that it is one of the key partners at this years The Manchester Contemporary art fair where it will be representing Andrew Bracey.

Andrew Bracey is an artist based in Manchester. For Manchester Contemporary 2011, Castlefield Gallery will be showing his most recent body of work ReconFigure Paintings, which features the artists alterations to well-known reproductions of historical paintings. Every human figure and piece of clothing have been painted out of the original composition with geometric, triangular shapes, forcing our vision to oscillate between the artists painterly additions and the usually obscured mise en scene of original photographic reproduction. Devising a set of guidelines for the creative process, the entirely unique images have been playfully transformed with suggestively haunting undertones.

Castlefield Gallery gratefully acknowledges sponsorship from Frames: Bespoke Picture Framing, Didsbury, Manchester.

Life in the UK / Balance of Probabilities: Osman Bozkurt & Didem Ozbek of PiST///

01/10/2011

Castlefield Gallery is pleased to present Life in the UK / Balance of Probabilities, a debut UK commission by Istanbul based artists Osman Bozkurt and Didem Ozbek of PiST/// for the Asia Triennial Manchester 2011. As the only artists to participate in the Triennial from Turkey, this project focuses on the issue of freedom of travel exploring one of the most salient issues of our time; the movement of people from one place to other parts of the world, whether for leisure or immigration.

For this ambitious multi artform project, PiST/// will transform the gallery into a temporary VISA Application Centre using the exterior and interior of the gallery as a mechanism to explore real stories fused with history and fiction. Examining the growth of the VISA industry in Istanbul as its starting point, the project that combines the theatrical and participatory with installation and film, will explore the radical impact that migration has had on demography, identity politics, global economic changes, community and belonging.

This exhibition is co-curated by Lora Sariaslan and Castlefield Gallery.

PREVIEW: Friday 30 September, 5-9pm – ALL WELCOME

Life in the UK / Balance of Probabilities at Castlefield Gallery is kindly supported by Go to Turkey, Rapiscan Systems, Qmatic and GBM Group Plc.
