The Social Lives of Objects

29/05/2009

Castlefield Gallery is pleased to present The Social Lives of Objects brings together the work of three artists based in Manchester and London, Hilary Jack, Lisa Penny and Dallas Seitz.

The exhibition examines the complex relationship we have with material goods and explores the journeys that objects make from production and consumption towards obsolescence and decay.

Working across media using found material collected from a variety of sources, the artists’ work is drawn together by their exploration of the social lives of everyday objects, and their interpretation of the essay by Bruno Latour Mixing Humans and Non Humans Together; The Sociology of the Door Closer.

The exhibition references social and anthropological research, museum display, personal memory and hints at the history and destiny of the objects the artists have chosen to work with. Plucked from the brink of oblivion these everyday objects are reformed and represented as sculptural installations, public interventions and wall based work, their status raised and their meaning changed.

A dark and playful narrative runs throughout the work which prods the subconscious and references the powerful and poetic relationship we have with material goods in a world overflowing with ‘stuff’.

Through the use of video, sculpture and painting the show explores aspects of life in an urban environment examining, collective consciousness, isolation, nostalgia and our understanding of ‘culture’. The work will explore the way artists’ engage with the subject of community, demonstrating a model of “usefulness” of contemporary practice to another realm of life that lies in revealing the insights of the individual into an apparently democratic entity.

Manuel Saiz: Private Party. Keep Out.

06/02/2009

Castlefield Gallery in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes Manchester are pleased to be launching Private Party. Keep Out, a solo show of new and existing work by Spanish born, London based artist Manuel Saiz. Using video, performance and sculpture, Saiz’s work addresses the identity of the artist and the way in which s/he interacts with the institution, the audience and society at large. Exploring existing relationships usually taken for granted in the contemporary art world, Saiz reverses our inherent presumptions with a ‘tongue in cheek’ perversity using the relationship between the artist, technician, institution, art theory and fellow artists as a starting point.
