Life in the UK / Balance of Probabilities: Osman Bozkurt & Didem Ozbek of PiST///

01/10/2011

Castlefield Gallery is pleased to present Life in the UK / Balance of Probabilities, a debut UK commission by Istanbul based artists Osman Bozkurt and Didem Ozbek of PiST/// for the Asia Triennial Manchester 2011. As the only artists to participate in the Triennial from Turkey, this project focuses on the issue of freedom of travel exploring one of the most salient issues of our time; the movement of people from one place to other parts of the world, whether for leisure or immigration.

For this ambitious multi artform project, PiST/// will transform the gallery into a temporary VISA Application Centre using the exterior and interior of the gallery as a mechanism to explore real stories fused with history and fiction. Examining the growth of the VISA industry in Istanbul as its starting point, the project that combines the theatrical and participatory with installation and film, will explore the radical impact that migration has had on demography, identity politics, global economic changes, community and belonging.

This exhibition is co-curated by Lora Sariaslan and Castlefield Gallery.

PREVIEW: Friday 30 September, 5-9pm – ALL WELCOME

Life in the UK / Balance of Probabilities at Castlefield Gallery is kindly supported by Go to Turkey, Rapiscan Systems, Qmatic and GBM Group Plc.

On Measuring Uncertainty: Two person show with Kit Craig and Andrew Lim

23/04/2011

Castlefield Gallery is pleased to present On Measuring Uncertainty, consisting of new sculptural work by Kit Craig and Andrew Lim. The works use references that range from early computer programmers flow charts and a 16th Century hermits dwelling to a cryptic interpretation of Rembrandts Self Portrait With Two Circles. In part reliant on the laws of physics and mathematics, the works combine both a sense of geometry and natural form, deciphering the vernacular of traditional gallery display or rearticulating the use of materials that are indigenous to the gallery space. .

Craig uses drawing as a central part of his practice, pushing our understanding of it, not only as a mere recording of thoughts or as an observational tool, but as extensions of the picture frame; viewing devices that attempt to articulate the process in which they were conceived, made and viewed. Often using everyday objects such as shelves, chairs or scaffolding, Lims approach is more extemporary in nature yet is carried out within a premeditated modus operandi governed by the space in which he works and contingent upon its materials and its dimensions. On Measuring Uncertainty will investigate broad philosophical themes of human knowledge and understanding, science versus religion or meaning in a contemporary context.

N.b. Gallery closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Friday 29 April

On Measuring Uncertainty is kindly supported by Atlas Bar; Manchester and Barefoot Wines.
