Shezad Dawood: Feature – Image

08/08/2008

Castlefield Gallery is pleased to present the new solo project Feature – Image by Shezad Dawood. One of three parts shown in three regions of the UK, the incarnation at Castlefield Gallery includes the 55 minute film Feature and new contextual work that offers the viewer further readings and associations within the structure of the film. Film stills, production and location scouting photographs are put through various processes, including four-colour screen-printing and metallic overlay; a generic landscape image with buffalos is rendered onto canvas by Pakistani film set painters; the printed advert in Art Review for the whole project is reproduced as a light-box display; and edited film footage from an open casting for the film is shown on its own monitor. These images, whether still or moving, act collectively as a mapping device for thinking about the film, from preparations to filming, from post-production to its promotion. They generate clues for decoding the film’s rich layering of references and meaning.
