Triennial City: Localising Asian Art – Book Launch

The publication Triennial City: Localising Asian Art has been published by Cornerhouse. Co-edited by Beccy Kennedy, Alnoor Mitha and Leon Wainwright and with essay contributions from a range of UK and international artists, curators and scholars, including Castlefield Gallery.

To celebrate & launch the book join us at Cornerhouse on Wednesday 23 July from 6pm in Meeting Room 1 (next to Cinema 1 ).

Since its establishment in 2008, the Asia Triennial Manchester has brought international artists, curators, art critics and audiences to Manchester, co-ordinating a network of galleries that presents the art of contemporary Asia and its diaspora.

This collection of new writing explores how the process of localising Asia in Manchester contributes to the contemporary transformations of art and urban space, and the global development of biennial and triennial culture at large.

Triennial City: Localising Asian Art provides critical perspectives on the history and future of the art of Asia as it traverses national and regional lines, and sets out what is at stake in the staging of this major ongoing cyclical art programme.

It shows how Manchester’s deep global connections, industrial past and migratory experience are reconfigured in the present by engaging new publics in the city, and the diverse ways that triennial culture may serve to inaugurate the city itself.

Vividly illustrated and argued, the book comprises a range of contributions from artists, academics, arts organisers and curators from around the globe, presented with an authoritative introductory essay.
