Symposium – Artist Development at Castlefield Gallery: Policy Change Through the Counterpublic?

8 November 2016 / 1-6pm

Artist Development at Castlefield Gallery: Policy Change Through the Counterpublic? is a report by Rebecca de Mynn (nee Hartley), and one of the outcomes of a collaborative doctoral award between Manchester Metropolitan University and Castlefield Gallery. The report, the result of a year of ethnographic research at Castlefield Gallery, presents findings on the subject of artist development (AD). It concludes that as a subaltern and agonistic practice AD exemplifies how arts organisations are not only influenced by, but themselves influence, policy agendas.

We would like to invite you to an afternoon of panel and group discussions that will provide the opportunity for artists, industry professionals, researchers, and policymakers involved in AD to share responses, ideas and experiences.

The premise of the research is that AD assists artists to access and assess the multiple channels of possibility available to them. It focusses on four main areas: (1) entry points into artist development; (2) the extensive range of artist development activities observed at Castlefield Gallery; (3) the problems of retrospectively capturing the value of artist development; and (4) how artist development practices can be used as a lens to understand the context of cultural policy.

Note: the report will be shared with participants before the event.
