Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2001, Gordon Cheung has successfully been awarded the Artes Mundi Prize 3, 2007; nominated for the BOC Emerging Artist Award, 2004; ‘Breath’ Residency at Chinese Arts Centre, 2004; Triangle Trust International Artist Fellowship, Pakistan, 2003 and ‘Diffuse Asia’ Kyoto Art Centre Residency, Japan, 2003.
He exhibits nationally including The Golden Record, Collective Gallery, Edinburgh, 2008; THE FUTURE CAN WAIT, The Atlantis Gallery, London, 2007; the John Moores Painting Prize, 2006 and the British Art Show 6 (various UK venues across Gateshead, Manchester, Nottingham and Bristol), 2005-06 and internationally including the Wilderness of Mirrors, Galerie Adler, Frankfurt, Germany, 2008; God is on Our Side, Unosunove Gallery, Rome Italy, 2007; the Heart of Darkness, Thomas Cohn Gallery, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 2006 and Blood Meridian, Michael Janssen Galerie, Berlin, Germany, 2007.
His work features in collections at the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design, London, the Museum of Senagallia, Italy, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, USA.
Cheung’s work ‘Rainbow End’ utilises digital printing processes to manipulate imagery taken from found posters and flyers, producing a haunting effect. His use of Financial Times stock listings reflects his ongoing investigation in creating artificial realities using imagery taken from our dependency on technology, and desire for information.
